Stanford Softball Downs Illinois 3-1

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Becky McCullough picked up a win in the circle and tallied two RBI as the fifth-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Illinois, 3-1, this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 22-4 on the year while the Fighting Illini drop to 13-11.

Stanford scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Catalina Morris led off with a single through the rightside. Freshman Tricia Aggabao followed that with an infield single to put runners on first and second. Lauren Lappin laid down a bunt for a hit to load the bases. with one out, Leah Nelson drew a walk as Morris came home. Becky McCullough then hit a single to centerfiled, scoring Aggabao and Lappin.

Illinois got one run back in the top of the second on a solo homerun by Jenna Hall.

Catalina Morris, Tricia Aggabao and Lauren Lappin each picked up a hit and run scored for the Cardinal. Leah Nelson went 1-for-2 with an RBI as well.

Becky McCullough improved to 5-0 overall with her win today. The freshman hurler scattered four hits over seven innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Mary Miller (8-5) took the loss for the Fighting Illini, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings of work.

Stanford closes out tournament play with UNLV tomorrow at 1 p.m.
