March 27, 2005

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 3 California softball team wrapped up the Carolina Classic Sunday with a 7-2 win against host North Carolina at the UNC Softball Complex.

The Bears, who defeated North Carolina, 5-0, on Saturday behind a Kelly Anderson no-hitter, finished the Carolina Classic with a 5-0 record. Cal (29-3) opens Pac-10 Conference play at Arizona State Friday at 7 p.m.

Anderson (15-1) picked up the victory again on Sunday, striking out four Tar Heels and yielding four hits.

Cal scored two runs in the bottom of the first on runs from third baseman Vicky Galindo and left fielder Lindsay James to erase an early 1-0 UNC lead.

In the third, Cal answered a North Carolina run in the top of the inning as a sacrifice fly from catcher Haley Woods scored Galindo for a 3-2 lead.

The Bears put the game out of reach in the fifth with four runs. A one-out single by Woods scored Galindo and James. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer singled later in the inning to plate Woods and center fielder Kaleo Eldredge.

Following Friday's conference opener in Tempe, Ariz. against ASU, the Bears have a two-game set with Arizona, April 2-3.
