No. 26 Cal in Fourth After First Round of PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 26 California is in fourth place with a score of 297 Friday after the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. No. 2 UCLA leads the 17-team tournament with a score of 291, and No. 7 Arizona State and No. 33 Oregon are tied for second at 295. No. 5 Pepperdine is fifth at 302.

The Golden Bears, who won the Oregon Duck Invitational March 21-22, were at four-over through 15 holes but lost five more strokes over the final three holes.

UCLA's Susie Matthews and Arizona State's Louise Stahle, the No. 1 player in the nation, lead the field at two-under 70. The Bruins' Amie Cochran is third at 71, and Cal junior Sophia Sheridan is tied for fourth at 72 with New Mexico State's Erin Kato and Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas.

Sheridan played bogey-free golf on the back nine and birdied the par 4 11th hole.

Cal senior Claire Dury, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 10th at 74.

Cal junior Sofie Andersson, sophomore Mika Takayama and freshman Enu Chung are tied for 21st with scores of 75. Chung posted an eagle on the par 5 14th hole.

The second round tees off Saturday at 8 a.m. MT.
