Huskies Can't Slow OSU's Brianne McGowan
April 2, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Brianne McGowan hit a pair of two-run home runs and struck out eight as the 15th-ranked Beavers defeated 17th-ranked Washington 7-3 this afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex. The win extends OSU's win streak to 17 games as the Beavers improve to 23-6 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10. Washington dips to 17-10 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10.
Dominique Lastrapes put the Huskies on the scoreboard in the first inning, lacing a RBI-double into left centerfield to score Ashley Charters. Charters reached base via walk and stole second base to put herself into scoring position.
The Beavers roared back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four unearned runs on two hits and a UW error. Adrienne Alo was plunked by a pitch to lead off the frame and a UW error at second base on a sacrifice attempt put runners on first and third. Mia Longfellow singled in Alo and Vanessa Iapala hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Maggie DeWall. McGowan punctuated the inning with a two-run home run over the left field wall to give OSU the 4-1 advantage.
McGowan kept the Huskies' offense in check, sitting the Huskies down in order in the second and third innings.
Oregon State led off the third inning with a single by Iapala to trigger a UW pitching change. The Huskies replaced starter Ashley Boek with freshman Caitlin Noble and Noble promptly caught the next batter looking on strikes. McGowan helped her own cause, belting her second two-run home run of the game over the left field fence to give the Beavers the 6-1 lead.
Washington answered in the top of the fifth inning with two runs on three hits and an OSU error. Noble sparked the UW rally with a line drive to right field. Lauren Greer walked and Jacki Hansen bunted her way on to load the bases. Charters then singled into left field to score Noble and Greer scored on a fielding error by the first baseman. McGowan worked her way out of the jam with a strikeout and ground out to preserve the 6-3 lead.
OSU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Alo to give the Beavers the 7-3 advantage.
McGowan (20-2) sat the Huskies down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to become just the fourth player in Oregon State history to amass 20 wins in a season. She earned the victory after scattering five hits and striking out eight.
Boek (11-6) took the loss as she gave up five runs on four hits over two innings with two strikeouts. Noble pitched four innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out five.
The Huskies and Beavers will face again Sunday at 1 pm. The game will air live on KKNW 1150 AM or online at www.newschannel1150.com.
