Woods Homers Twice as No. 3 Cal Defeats No. 18 ASU

April 1, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 3 California softball team used two homers from junior catcher Haley Woods to defeat No. 18 Arizona State, 4-2, in the Pac-10 Conference opener Friday at Farrington Stadium.

Woods' first homer, a three-run blast in the top of the first inning, provided Cal (30-3, 1-0) with all of the runs it would need. With one out, Sun Devil starter Katie Burkhart (9-4), who defeated the Bears, 1-0, on March 13, hit Cal leftfielder Lindsay James. Two batters later, second baseman Jessica Pamanian singled. With two outs, Woods homered to left field.

Bears' starter Kelly Anderson struck out four Sun Devils and scattered six hits in improving to a team-best 16-1. Anderson, the reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, allowed just three hits through the first five innings before ASU scored twice in the sixth. The Sun Devils stranded eight runners and left the bases loaded in the sixth.

Woods added a solo homer - her team leading ninth of the season - in the seventh.

The Bears continue their road trip Saturday at No. 2 Arizona at 7 p.m. PST.
