Third-Ranked Women Of Troy Look To Jockey For Position Atop Pac-10 Standings When They Host Top-Ranked Stanford And No. 20 California This Weekend

THIS WEEK -- Following a pair of 5-2 victories last week, the third-ranked USC women's tennis team (15-1, 6-0) hosts top-ranked Stanford (17-0, 4-0) on Friday, April 8, at 1:30 p.m. and No. 20 California on Saturday, April 9, at noon. Both matches will be held at Marks Stadium. The Trojans and the Cardinal are undefeated in conference play and are jockeying for position atop the conference standings going into the second-to-last weekend of the regular season.
The Women of Troy returned five letterwinners and welcomed four newcomers in 2005. The young team features no seniors and a starting lineup led by two freshmen, three sophomores and a junior. USC went 18-7 overall in 2004, finished second in the Pac-10 with a 7-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
ITA RANKING UPDATES -- The Women of Troy climbed another spot this week to No. 3 in the latest ITA rankings released on April 5. The Trojans boast three ranked players, including two ranked in the Top 15 in singles with No. 10 Nicole Leimbach (freshman) and No. 13 Lindsey Nelson (freshman), and Anca Anastasiu entering at No. 108. USC's Carine Vermeulen and Nelson come in at No. 27 in doubles and Anastasiu and Nelson appear at No. 37.
YOUTH PREVAILS-- USC freshman Lindsey Nelson, sophomores Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias and junior Carine Vermeulen have done more than what is normally expected of such youth. Nelson holds a spotless record (16-0) so far this season in singles play, while Anastasiu, Matias and Vermeulen hold only two singles losses each. Nelson and Anastasiu have teamed up for an 11-0 record in doubles play at the No. 2 position.
USC vs. STANFORD -- Wednesday's match against Stanford will mark the 68th meeting between these two teams. The Cardinal hold a 50-17 advantage in the series. Stanford won their first meeting this season, 5-2, on Feb. 26 in Palo Alto, Calif.
USC VS. CALIFORNIA -- USc and California have previously met 48 times in their history with the Women of Troy enjoying a slim 25-23 advantage. The Trojans won the first meeting of the year, 5-2, on Feb. 25.
RECENT RESULTS-- The Women of Troy are coming off a pair of 5-2 victories over two Top 25 teams. USC defeated No. 18 Harvard on March 30 at Marks Stadium, then headed to Eugene, Ore. where they beat No. 22 Oregon on April 1.

Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien is in his 10th season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2004 Women of Troy to a 18-7 overall record, the NCAA Round of 16 and a No. 8 final national ranking. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last 12 years, he has compiled a 219-107 (.672) overall record and his teams have made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals four out of the last six years.
