Cal Outlasts Huskies, 4-3

BERKELEY, Calif.-- The 20th-ranked Huskies hit a pair of home runs against third-ranked California but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears held on for the 4-3 win. The loss dips Washington to 19-12 on the season and 1-3 in the Pac-10, while Cal improves to 34-3 and 3-1 in conference action.
The game, which was delayed 25 minutes in the first inning due to rain, was scoreless until Cal's Kaleo Elderedge hit a two-run home run over the right field wall. The Golden Bears tacked on one more run in the inning with a RBI-single by Emily Friedman.
The Huskies answered in the fourth with a two-run home run by Sarah Hyatt to cut Cal's lead to 3-2. The blast, which cleared the scoreboard in centerfield, was Hyatt's 10th of the season.
California added an insurance run in the sixth when Vicky Galindo led off with a double and scored on a groundout by Elderedge.
Washington attempted a comeback in the seventh inning when Kathy Fiske hit a leadoff home run over the right field wall but the Golden Bears sealed the deal with a ground out and double play.
Kristina Thorson (15-3) earned the win for Cal as the gave up two runs on two hits in four innings of work. Kelly Anderson picked up the save as she held Washington to one run on two hits in three innings.
The Huskies return to action Saturday against No. 8 Stanford at 1 pm.
