Top-Ranked Stanford Downs No. 11 UCLA, 5-2
April 9, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Despite singles victories from Daniela Bercek and Laura Gordon, the No. 11-ranked UCLA women's tennis team fell just short in its quest to claim a share of the Pac-10 title Saturday, falling to top-ranked Stanford, 5-2 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins drop to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the Pac-10 with the loss. Stanford remains undefeated on the season at 19-0 overall and 6-0 in conference action.
Both teams began the afternoon in a heated battle to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. Stanford had an early advantage following an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 position, however both remaining courts were very tight. The Cardinal claimed the point when 29th-ranked Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey upset second-ranked Bercek and Riza Zalameda, 9-8(5) at court No. 1. That match proved to be the clincher, as just second later UCLA's Sarah Gregg and Tracy Lin posted a 9-7 victory over Whitney Deason and Lejla Hodzic.
Once singles play began, Gordon evened the match at one apiece following a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Hodzic at court No. 6. The Cardinal, however, took a 3-1 lead in the match after posting a pair of straight-set wins at court Nos. 4 and 5.
Stanford clinched the match, taking a 4-1 lead, when 29th-ranked Alice Barnes defeated Zalameda, 6-4, 6-2 at court No. 2. That match was followed up moments later by another win for the Cardinal, a 6-4, 6-3 victory by 45th-ranked Theresa Logar over Alex McGoodwin at court No. 3.
UCLA did win the featured match of the afternoon at the No. 1 position, as Bercek, ranked 25th nationally, upset the ninth-ranked Liu, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. It marked Bercek's second victory in as many days over a top-10 player, as she was a straight-set winner over fourth-ranked Suzi Babos of Cal on Friday.
The Bruins have just two regular season matches remaining beginning with Pepperdine on April 14 in Malibu. Although Saturday was the Bruins' final Pac-10 counting match of the season, UCLA will host the USC Women of Troy in a makeup match on April 16 at Noon that will not count in the conference standings.
