Win Streak Extends To 22 Games As No. 13 Softball Rallies Past No. 17 Arizona State, 3-2

April 10, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 13 ranked Oregon State softball team extended its winning streak to 22 games on Sunday afternoon as the Beavers rallied for a 3-2 victory against No. 17 Arizona State. The win helped OSU remain undefeated in Pacific-10 Conference play (7-0) and allowed the Beavers to sweep the season series in Arizona for the first time in program history.

Oregon State improves to 28-6 overall and its 7-0 Pac-10 start remains the best in school history. Arizona State drops to 26-13 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.

Senior second baseman Kelly Petersen's third inning home run to straight-away center field sparked the Beaver offense and opened the scoring. The long ball was the 21st of Petersen's career - tied for 4th on OSU's all-time chart - and second of the season.

Back-to-back singles by Adrienne Alo and Mia Longfellow as well as a walk from Cambria Miranda, led to another Oregon State run as Alo crossed the plate on a wild pitch from ASU hurler Katie Burkhart.

Sophomore pitcher Brianne McGowan (25-2) maintained her dominance in the circle, allowing just one hit over the first three innings. Beaver catch Lisa Allen also gunned down a pair of runners attempting to steal.

The Sun Devils fought back to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. ASU reeled off three consecutive singles and then drew a pair of walks to push both runs across the plate.

The Beavers rallied for the victory in the seventh inning. Third baseman Sherina Galvan singled up the middle to lead off the frame and came around to score when ASU third baseman Jen McCard fielded Alana Mendoza's sacrifice and fired it over the second baseman's head all of the way to the center field fence.

In the Sun Devil half, McGowan ended the game with her ninth strikeout. The 6-2 hurler moved into a tie for 5th place in the OSU single season record book with 25 victories and has won 21 consecutive appearances. The complete game was her 19th of the year.

The Beavers will face Santa Clara University on Monday in Eugene at Howe Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Beavers and Broncos were originally scheduled to face each other in February at the Campbell-Cartier Classic but the game was canceled due to rain.
