Bruins, Golden Bears, Split Weekend Games; Stanford Game Rained Out
In the first of eight regular season televised games for the Bruins in 2005, defensive breakdowns led to a 2-1 loss to California on Saturday before defeating the Golden Bears by the same score on Sunday afternoon. Friday's scheduled game against Stanford was rained out and will be rescheduled when the Cardinal visits Los Angeles.

Three infield errors cost the Bruins dearly during Saturday's contest, as Cal scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take the lead. UCLA responded in the top of the sixth when a leadoff single from Caitlin Benyi opened the game-tying rally that finished with an RBI single to left by Emily Zaplatosch. UCLA loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but was not able to push a runner across the plate. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bruins left fielder Ashley Herrera almost made a diving catch to send the game to extra innings, but the ball dropped to the ground, allowing the Golden Bears to score the game winning run.

UCLA started Sunday's game with hot bats, taking advantage of consecutive one-out singles from Tara Henry and Andrea Duran followed by a bases-clearing two-out double from Zaplatosch to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. The game would then turn into a pitchers duel with Bruin freshman Anjelica Selden tossing a no-hitter through six and two-thirds innings before Cal's Haley Woods connected on a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Selden did get the win as UCLA triumphed by a 2-1 margin for the first Pac-10 victory of the 2005 season.
