Oregon State's Ellsbury, USC's Kennedy Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON STATE junior outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and USC sophomore right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Ellsbury, from Madras, Ore., helped Oregon State hand Stanford its first home series loss since 2003, extending his hitting streak to 13 games in the process. Ellsbury batted .583 (7-for-12) with one homer, two doubles, six RBI, three runs and a stolen base for a 1.000 slugging percentage in the series. He also had three walks and one hit by pitch for a .688 on-base percentage. Ellsbury singled home the tying and winning runs with two out in the eighth inning as OSU rallied from a 7-5 deficit to a 9-7 win in the opening game on Apr. 9, giving him 4 RBI in the game. He then homered as the Beavers came back from a 9-2 deficit to win the second game of the doubleheader 11-10. For the series, Ellsbury had 15 putouts and played errorless defense. On the season Ellsbury leads the Pac-10 in batting average (.461), on base percentage (.549) and stolen bases (17). He has also recorded 59 hits (2nd, Pac-10), five homers, two triples (t9th), 12 doubles (t4th), and 30 RBI on the year.

Kennedy, from Huntington Beach, Calif., threw his first career complete game and struck out a career-high 15 batters in Saturday's 9-0 shutout against UCLA. He allowed just three hits and walked two batters. He opened the game with four straight strikeouts and finished the game by striking out five of the last six batters he faced. Kennedy is 3-0 during Pac-10 play with a 2.08 ERA in 21 and two-thirds innings pitched, having allowed just five runs on 14 hits, while striking out 37 opposing batters and allowing just eight walks. For the season, Kennedy has a 2.96 ERA (7th, Pac-10) with 77 strikeouts (2nd), and opposing batters are hitting just .190 against him (3rd). For 40 of Kennedy's 77 strikeouts, the batter was struck out looking - a tally in which he leads the Conference by 14.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Ellsbury, while it is the 49th such honor for Oregon State. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Kennedy and the 55th selection all-time for USC.
