April 12, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- CALIFORNIA junior catcher Haley Woods has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and Oregon State sophomore Brianne McGowan has been named Pitcher of the Week for Apr. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Woods, from Burlingame, Calif., hit .500 going 6-for-12 at the plate in Cal's five games, which included victories over St. Mary's twice in a double header (10-0 and 10-0), No. 20 Washington (4-3), and a split with No. 12 UCLA (2-1 and 1-2). She added six RBI, two runs scored and hit two home runs. In Cal's first 10-0 victory against Saint Mary's on April 6, Woods went 3-for-4 with three RBI and hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, which envoked the 8-run rule. She also added two RBI in game two of the doubleheader. In the Bears' April 9-10 split with No. 12 UCLA, Woods added two hits, where one of the two hits was a seventh-inning homer that broke up UCLA pitcher Anjelica Selden's no-hitter. Defensively, Woods completed the week with 32 putouts. On the season, Woods carries a batting average of .350 and leads Cal in home runs (12), RBI (47), total bases (87) and slugging percentage (.707).
McGowan, from Reno, Nev., led the Beavers to a perfect 4-0 record last week, improving OSU to an umblemished 7-0 Pac-10 record and 28-6 overall. In 26 innings of work, McGowan posted a 1.08 ERA on the week. She also recorded 30 strikeouts, including eight K's en route to a complete game victory at No. 2 ranked Arizona, leading the Beavers to their first victory against the Wildcats in 17 meetings, dating back to the 1999 season. She opened the week by throwing a complete game 1-hitter and striking out nine against in-state rival No. 25 Oregon, leading the Beavers to a 2-1 victory over the Ducks. McGowan pitched her 19th complete game of the year with nine strikeouts in a 3-2 victory over No. 17 Arizona State on Apr. 10, helping the Beavers sweep the season series in Arizona for the first time in program history. McGowan has won 21 consecutive appearances and has helped Oregon State extend its school record winning streak to 22 games. The Beavers are off to their best start ever in Pac-10 action (7-0) and have matched their highest conference win total since finishing the 2002 campaign with a 7-14 mark.
