April 15, 2005

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball program has signed highly touted high school volleyball player Bryte Nielson to a National Letter of Intent, it was announced today by Golden Bear head coach Rich Feller.

Nielson is a 5-11 setter from Saratoga, who was a standout at both Saratoga and Los Gatos High Schools. She was first team all-league all four years of high school, and as a senior was second team All-Central Coast Section. Nielson helped Los Gatos High School to Santa Clara Valley Athletic League title and a second place finish in the Central Coast Section this past fall. For her high school career, Nielson's teams compiled a 120-21 record.

Nielson is also mentioned as one of PrepVolleyball's Senior Aces and is rated the nation's 97th top high school volleyball player. She plays club volleyball for the Vision Gold 18s, and helped Vision Gold 18s to a second-place finish at the 2004 Junior Olympics.

An outstanding high school basketball player as well, Nielson was a four-time first team all-league selection and honorable mention All-Metro and All-Central Coast Section as a senior.

'Bryte is a great athlete and a tremendous competitor,' said Feller. 'She will bring to our program the ability to play several different positions, including setter. We are fortunate Bryte chose Cal to continue her volleyball career and education.'

Nielson joins Morgan Beck, Sydney Blancarte and Kathleen Reilly as the Bears' incoming freshman class for the 2005 season. Beck, Blancarte and Reilly signed with Cal Nov. 17 during the early signing period.

The Bears finished the 2004 season ranked 18th nationally with a 17-12 overall record and 11-7 mark in the Pac-10, qualifying for their third consecutive NCAA Regional berth.
