Huskies Upend Arizona State 8-0

April 16, 2005

SEATTLE-- Freshman Caitlin Noble threw a four-hit shutout today to lead No. 24 Washington to the 8-0, five-inning victory over No. 21 Arizona State this afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. The win improves Washington's record to 20-14 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils slip to 26-15 overall and 1-8 in the Pac-10.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the third inning, scoring four runs on two outs. Dominique Lastrapes singled up the middle and ASU intentionally walked Kristen Rivera. Sarah Hyatt drew a walk to load the bases and Aimee Minor drove in two runs with a single through the left side. Kathy Fiske drove in two more runs with a double to left field to put UW on top, 4-0.

Washington scored four more runs in the fourth inning on three hits and three Sun Devil errors. Lauren Greer led off with a single and Jacki Hansen reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Lastrapes followed with an infield single to load the bases. Rivera then hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop that was mishandled to score two runs.

Arizona State made a pitching change, replacing starter Desiree Serrano with Ashley Werschky. Hyatt singled to third base to score Lastrapes and another ASU fielding error scored pinch runner Jessica Wilkinson to put UW on top 8-0.

Noble shut ASU down in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to evoke the eight-run-lead mercy-rule.

Noble (8-6) earned the win as she held the Sun Devils to four hits over five innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Serrano (10-5) took the loss as she allowed eight runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

The Huskies and Sun Devils square-off again tomorrow at 1 pm.
