No. 15 OSU Evens Series With 17-1 Victory

April 16, 2005

TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State scored in all but two innings as the 15th-ranked Beavers beat eighth-ranked Arizona 17-1 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium. Anton Maxwell and two relievers combined on a six-hitter for OSU (27-6 overall, 6-2 Pac-10) and Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 15 games in the four-hour, 14-minute contest.

The Beavers and Wildcats (25-11, 9-2) conclude their series on Sunday at 12 noon before returning home for series against Washington State and Arizona State the next two weekends. All of those games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and

Darwin Barney, Shea McFeely and Cole Gillespie all had three hits for Oregon State. The Beavers had just one extra-base hit among their 18 hits and also got two hits each from Mitch Canham, Andy Jenkins and Ryan Gipson.

Maxwell, who had been knocked out of his previous start at Stanford in the third inning, allowed the Wildcats' only run to the first hitter of the game as Trevor Crowe homered. He later allowed a pair of walks later in the frame, but starting with a strikeout of Chris Frey to end the inning, the sophomore lefthander retired 14 of the next 18 hitters. A one-out single and walk in the sixth innings finaly sent the Beavers to their bullpen but by then the Beavers were in front 10-1.

Perhaps Maxwell's biggest pitch of the night came in the bottom of the fourth with OSU leading 4-1. The Wildcats put runners at first and second with one out for the No. 9 hitter in the order, Bryan Kervin. Maxwell fell behind in the count three balls, one strike and was in danger of going back to the top of the order where Crowe - batting .430 on the year - would represent the go-ahead run. But Maxwell got a swinging strike to run the count full; after a foul ball, he froze Kervin with a called third strike to end the inning.

Oregon State then scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 6-1 on a pinch-hit run-scoring single by Gillespie and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Barney.

Maxwell matched his career-high with eight strikeouts and allowed four hits and four walks in improving his record to 6-0 this season.

The Beavers put themselves in control of the game at 10-1 in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk, getting run-scoring singles from Gillespie, Gipson and Barney and a squeeze bunt from Tyler Graham.

Oregon State went in front 3-1 in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs on just one hit, aided by a walk, a hit batter and a balk from Wildcat righthander Kevin Guyette and two defensive miscues. Canham walked to start the inning and Andy Jenkins followed with a grounder to shortstop Jason Donald; Donald's throw to second wasn't in time to retire Canham, who was running on the pitch, and both runners were safe. With one out, Gipson singled through the right side to drive in Canham and send Jenkins to third with Gipson taking second an error. Guyette balked home Jenkins but OSU couldn't take further advantage.

OSU made it 4-1 in the third when McFeely and Canham singled with one out and Jenkins walked to load the bases. With two out, Guyette hit Gipson with the first pitch he saw to force in a run.

The Beavers had taken their first lead of the series in the top of the first inning after Ellsbury drew a leadoff walk from Guyette. With two out, Ellsbury advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored when Chris Campos singled through the right side.
