No. 8 Cardinal Defeat No. 25 Oregon 17-7 In Eugene

Eugene, Ore. - Freshman third baseman Michelle Smith's grand slam in the top of the seventh inning capped a 17-7 win over Oregon for the eighth-ranked Stanford softball team this afternoon at Howe Field. The Cardinal improve to 30-7, 5-2 in Pac-10 play while the Ducks drop to 25-15, 3-6 in league action.
Smith's 14 homeruns this season ties her for second on Stanford's single season homeruns list. She needs just one more to tie for first with former Cardinal All-American Jessica Mendoza.
Lauren Lappin singled in the top of the first inning to get things started for the Cardinal. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches to Michelle Smith and Leah Nelson, loaded the bases. Lappin scored on an error by the second baseman. Tricia Aggabao then singled home Heather Shook, who pinch ran for Smith. Nelson also scored on the play on a mishandled ball by the rightfielder.
Stanford picked up another run in the top of the first when Jackie Rinehart led off the inning with a single up the middle. She scored on a double by Lappin.
Erin Howe led off the third inning with a walk. Shoney Hixson entered the game as a pinch runner. Aggabao was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Meghan Sickler reached base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Anna Beardman then hit her third homerun of the season to make the score 7-0.
Lovena Chaput hit a solo homerun for the Ducks in the bottom of the third. Freshman pitcher Becky McCullough entered the game in relief with two outs and got the Cardinal out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning.
Oregon scored another run in the bottom of the fifth when a groundout to the shortstop scored Chaput.
Three straight singles by the Cardinal, loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Aggabao scored on an error by the second baseman and pinch hitter Lindsay Key came home on a single by Catalina Morris. Lappin singled up the middle to score Beardman. Freshman Michelle Smith then hit a grand slam to centerfield to clear the bases. Pinch hitter Michelle Third singled to right while Aggabao also notched her second single of the inning. Lindsay Key then homered to rightfield, making the score 17-2.
The Ducks scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by Chaput and Sabol. Then Beth Boskovich hit a three-run homer to make the score 17-7.
Catalina Morris went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while teammate Lauren Lappin had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Tricia Aggabao went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI as well. Anna Beardman chipped in two hits in two at bats with three RBI and two runs scored. Jackie Rinehart also recorded two hits and scored two runs for the Cardinal.
Becky McCullough (12-1) picked up the win in relief for Stanford, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Oregon's Amy Harris (12-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
Stanford and Oregon are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Howe Field as both teams close out weekend play.
