Dergal, Schreefel Lead Strong Trojan Start At Pac-10 Championships

Led by junior Tanya Dergal (-2), freshman Dewi-Claire Schreefel (-1) and a Paolo Moreno hole-in-one, USC's women's golf team finished one shot back of the lead on the first day of the three-day 2005 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, Calif., on Monday (April 18).
Dergal's 70 and Schreefel's 71 left them tied for third and fifth, respectively, and helping the No. 20 Women of Troy shoot a 291 and stay close to No. 2 UCLA, which finished in first at 290. The next closest finisher was Arizona State at 297. The Bruins' Susie Mathews led all golfers at -4.
USC freshman Paola Moreno was 13th overall after shooting a 74 (+2), a total that featured an ace on the par 3 sixth hole. Sophomore Catalina Marin was tied for 20th (76, +4) while sophomore Verinoca Felibert was tied for 41st at 80 (+8).
Dergal recorded five birdies on the day, two on par 3s, one on a par 4 and two more on par 5s. She finished with two birdies on the final three holes. Schreefel had four birdies while Marin and Felibert had one apiece.
