April 18, 2005

PLEASANTON, Calif. - No. 27 California is in eighth place Monday after the opening round of the Pac-10 Championships at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, Calif. The host-Golden Bears fired an opening-round score of 17-over 305 but are only seven shots behind fourth-place Washington (298).

No. 2 UCLA - the defending conference champion - is at one-over 289 and holds a two-shot advantage over No. 20 USC (291). No. 5 Arizona State is third at 297, and No. 22 Washington State is fifth at 299.

'It was a good day,' UCLA head coach Carrie Forsyth said. 'Susie (Matthews) played really well. We got off to a poor start so I'm happy we still had a good enough score. This gives us something to build on for tomorrow. The team is used to playing in contention every tournament but we still have two rounds to play.'

Matthews leads the individual race by one shot at four-under 68. Arizona State's Louise Stahle, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation, is second at 69, while USC's Tanya Dergal and WSU's Kim Welch are tied for third at 70. UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, the defending Pac-10 champion, is tied for seventh at 73.

'I got off to a quick start shooting four-under after 10,' Matthews said. 'I started to hit well and things took off from there.'

USC's Paula Moreno sank a hole-in-one on the par 3, 158-yard sixth hole. She finished the day in 13th with a 74.

Junior Sophia Sheridan, a 2004 honorable mention All-American, leads Cal in a tie for 14th at three-over 75. Junior Sofie Andersson, also a 2004 honorable mention All-American, and freshman Enu Chung were the Bears' next best golfers on the day, tying for 20th at 76. Andersson led Cal with four birdies, while Sheridan had three.

Cal's Claire Dury and Mika Takayama are tied for 33rd with rounds of 78.

'We need to get off to a better start and avoid the bunkers,' Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. 'We also must shake off the pressure of being the host and come out and play hard tomorrow.'

Second-round play begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. from holes 1 and 10.
