UCLA, Mathews Lead After Day One

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Susie Mathews carded a 4-under 68 to lead defending conference champion UCLAto a first-day lead at the Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships on Monday at the Ruby Hill Golf Club.The second-ranked Bruins shot a 289 (+1) and hold a two-stroke lead over USC (+3, 291) on the par72, 6,304-yard course.

'It was a good day,' UCLA coach Carrie Forsyth said. 'Susie played really well. We got off to apoor start, so I'm happy we still had a good enough score. This gives us something to build on fortomorrow.

'You always want to be in contention. It's a good place to be. The team is used to playing incontention every tournament, but we still have two rounds to play.'

Arizona State (+9, 297) is third followed by Washington (+10, 298), Washington State (+11, 299),Arizona (+12, 300), Stanford (+16, 304), host California (+17, 305), Oregon (+20, 308) and OregonState (+39, 327).

Mathews, a junior from Adelaide, Australia, fired five birdies, including three on the front nine,to take a one-stroke lead over Arizona State freshman Louise Stahl (-3, 69) in the individualstandings. Stahl, the nation's top-ranked player, had four birdies today.

'I got off to a quick start, shooting four-under after 10,' Mathews said. 'I started to hit welland things took off from there.'

Tanya Dergal also fired five birdies, but the USC junior double-bogeyed the first hole and bogeyedthe 12th hole to finish the first day in a third-place tie with Washington State senior Kim Welch(-2, 70). USC freshman Dewi-Claire Schreefel (-1, 71) is fifth and Arizona junior CassandraKirkland (even, 72) is sixth. Six golfers, including UCLA senior Charlotte Mayorkas, last year'sPac-10 individual champion, are tied for seventh (+1, 73).

USC freshman Paolo Moreno recorded a hole-in-one on the sixth hole but finished the day in 13th(+2, 74).
