April 19, 2005

PLEASANTON, Calif.- - Despite a much-improved effort resulting in better scores all around, the Oregon State women's golf team couldn't ascend the leaderboard Tuesday and remains in 10th place with one round to play at the Pac-10 Championships. The team posted a two-round total of 639.

'Things went a lot better today,' said Coach Risë Lakowske. 'We were definitely striking the ball better.'

Freshman Jessi Gebhardt led the Beavers with a 3-over 75 and moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd with a two-round total of 156. Gebhardt had two birdies and five bogeys on the day.

'Jessi played much better today, which was her goal,' Lakowske said.

Sophomore Jill Ferrante struggled on her front nine but fired a 35 coming in to end up with a 6-over 78, including an eagle on her 11th hole. Ferrante dropped her second shot on the 380-yard par-4 second hole within three feet and it rolled in for the eagle.

'Jill just had a few big numbers to start the day, but she really picked it up on her back nine,' added Lakowske.

Second-ranked UCLA widened its lead over USC and will take a 7-stroke advantage into the final round at 3-over 579. The Arizona schools are tied for third, 10 strokes back.

Washington State's Kim Welch -- behind seven birdies and just one bogey -- took over first place with an impressive 6-under 66 and leads Arizona'sCassandra Kirkland and UCLA's Susie Mathews by three strokes with one round to play.

Freshman Julie Uhrik posted a 78 and is in 46th, while seniors Kelly Kerkvliet and Alex Lucio are 49th and 50th, respectively.
