Tough Day For Huskies At Pac-10 Championships

April 21, 2005

OJAI, Calif. - It was a struggle across the board today for the Washington women's tennis team in day one of the individual Pac-10 Championships. All Husky entrants were eliminated from singles competition, with only junior Stephanie Svanfeldt recording a win in the Invitational draw. The women will hope to regroup and shift their focus to Friday's doubles action.

Washington's four entrants in the main singles draw were all competitive, but none could survive the first round. 18th-ranked senior Dea Sumantri won her first set comfortably against UCLA's Tracy Lin, 6-1, but from then on could only muster three games and dropped the last two sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Junior Dinka Hadzic, ranked 74th, also breezed through her first set, 6-2, against Arizona's Kelly Perry. Perry reversed the score with a 6-2 second set win, then prevailed in a third set tiebreak to knock out Hadzic.

Making her first appearance in the talent-laden tourney, freshman Tara Simpson put up a good fight but lost 6-4, 6-3 to UCLA's Alex McGoodwin. Sophomore Saskia Nauenberg was also a first round loser, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Washington State's 51st-ranked Ekaterina Burduli.

In the Invitational singles draw, Svanfeldt earned the only win on the day for the Huskies, taking out UCLA's Anya Loncaric, 6-3, 6-4. But Svanfeldt's run ended in the second round, where Arizona State's Rebecca Rankin handed the Husky a 6-4, 6-3 defeat. Sophomore Monika Kolbovic and freshmen Allison Rainey and Keri Sugiyama all went down in straight sets in the first round of the Invitational draw. Seniors Megan Flynn and Cheryl Naruse, who see limited action, both withdrew prior to their matches.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Hadzic and Sumantri will take part in the main doubles draw, as will Nauenberg and senior Mugette Ahn. The teams of Rainey and Svanfeldt, and Kolbovic and Simpson will see action in the Invitational doubles draw. First and second rounds in each doubles draw are scheduled for Friday.
