Varsity And Second Varsity Eight Will Face Minnesota And SMU

April 21, 2005

Coming Up -- The No. 13 UCLA Women's Rowing team will split the weekend, with the varsity and second varsity eight traveling to Minnesota and the varsity four and novice eight and third varsity eight remaining in Southern California. Both squads will compete on Saturday, April 23. This will be the last race the Bruins will have before competing at the PCRC and Pac-10 Rowing Championships on the weekend of May 14-15.

The varsity eight will face both No. 19 Minnesota and Southern Methodist University at Lake Phalen, MN at 8:45a.m Pacific. The second varsity eight will also face Minnesota and SMU, with the race scheduled for 8:30a.m Pacific. This will be the third year for what has become an annual tradition of interregional racing between these two young programs. Last year, the Gophers traveled to Ballona Creek, where the Bruins's varsity eight defeated them for the first time. This will be the Bruins first match up against SMU this season, a team who recently had a strong weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, placing sixth in the varsity eight race.

'We are excited to continue the duel with Minnesota. With both of our programs reaching the Top 20 for the first time this season, it should be a great competition. We have a lot of respect for what they are doing and we will show that respect by leaving nothing on the race course' says Head Coach Amy Fuller Kearney. 'We need to focus on our race and do what we do best Our challenge is to get faster every week, regardless of who we are racing, and I think we are up to that challenge.'

The varsity four, third varsity eight, and novice eight will race one more time at their home course in Marina Del Rey, when Loyola Marymount hosts UCLA and Stanford on Saturday, April 23. The varsity four will be competing at 9:15 a.m against Stanford, the first match-up of the two squads this season, and LMU. The UCLA novice squad will face a challenge from a more experienced LMU second varsity in preparation for the level of racing they will face at the Pac-10 Championships. This race will occur at 9:00 a.m. The third varsity eight, comprised of 5 sophomores and three freshman will finish their season racing against the LMU lightweight eight at 8:45 a.m. Four of the athletes from the 3V will be members of the Open 4+ which will race at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on May 14.
