Berkeley, Calif. - The second-ranked California softball team defeated No. 7 Stanford this afternoon, 1-0, at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears improve to 40-8, 7-5 in the Pac-10, while the Cardinal drop to 34-9, 8-3 in league play.

Cal struck in the first when a fielder's choice by Kaleo Eldredge scored Vicky Galindo.

Becky McCullough (14-3) took the loss for the Cardinal, scattering four hits over six innings and allowing only one unearned run. Kristina Thornson (18-4) picked up the win in the circle, pitching seven scoreless innings for the Golden Bears.

Michelle Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Cardinal offensively. Jackie Rinehart also picked up a hit on the day.

Stanford is back in action next weekend as they hit the road to face Washington and UCLA.
