Bears Try To Remain Undefeated, Host Stanford In Big Row

This Week: The No. 2 Golden Bears face No. 9 Stanford April 30 at Redwood Shores. The two schools faced each other earlier in the reason with the Bears winning a convincing race at the San Diego Crew Classic. In last year's dual race, the Bears' varsity eight, then ranked No. 2, defeated the Cardinal by a seven-second margin.
History of The Big Row: The women's Big Row began in 1976 and Cal, which won last year's race, leads the all-time series, 18-10. The Bears have dominated the series in stretches, winning five in a row from 1997-02, and four straight from 1991-94. Stanford posted a three-year winning streak form 1982-84.

Washington Recap (4/23/05): The varsity eight, second varsity eight, and novice eight all posted wins at Washington, with the varsity eight posting two consecutive wins for the first time in 25 years. The varsity four boat could not handle the Huskies, losing their race.
Looking Ahead: After this weekend's Big Row, the Bears will head right back to Berkeley to prepare for the Pac-10 Championships, where the varsity eight hopes to win its second consecutive title. At last year's Pac-10s the varsity eight took first place, defeating Washington, Washington State and Stanford. The second varsity eight and novice eight both finished first, and the varsity four placed second behind Washington. The 2004 Pac-10 Championships are being held on May 13 at Lake Natoma.
