OSU Rowers Set to Take on Huskies

April 27, 2005

Oregon State Women's Rowing takes on the Washington Huskies at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Montlake Cut on Seattle's Lake Washington. Also racing UW will be the Beaver's Men's Crew.

'We're expecting a tough race from the University of Washington,' said head coach Charlie Owen. 'It's a great rivalry. This is our last race before Pac-10s, so going up against the Huskies will be a good measure for where we are in our preparations for the championships.'

The Husky dual will be the first time this spring the Beavers have faced No. 12-ranked Washington. The race also marks the end of the racing season for the 2nd Novice 8 and Novice 4, because the May 15 Pac-10 Championships do not include those events.

Freshman coach Annie Kakela looks forward to aggressive racing from the novice team: 'For the 2nd Novice 8 and the 4, the Huskies are the most challenging opponent they'll race and the culmination of their season. These athletes have been training hard, and their times show that they have gained substantial boat speed.'

The 1st Novice 8 has won four of its five races this spring and expects a real challenge from the Husky crew. 'The University of Washington always has a strong team, so this is an important race for us,' Kakela said. 'We're looking forward to aggressive racing.'

Beaver fans making the trip to Seattle can watch the racing from the Montlake Bridge near the Husky football stadium. The bridge spans the race course near the finish line and provides a view of the entire 2000-meter course.

After the Husky dual, Oregon State will race at Pac-10 Championships, Sunday, May 15 in Sacramento, Calif. Pac-10s are the regional qualifier for NCAA Championships.
