Softball Upsets No. 4 Stanford 6-4

April 29, 2005

SEATTLE-- Senior Kristen Rivera hit her 73rd career home run en route to Washington's 6-4 upset win over fourth-ranked Stanford this afternoon at the Husky Softball Stadium. Rivera's blast ties three-time All-American Jaime Clark and places her fifth on the Pac-10 all-time list. Washington boasts a five-game win streak and improves to 26-15 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal fall to 34-10 overall and 8-4 in the Pac-10.

The Huskies jumped out the quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with a RBI-single by senior Kathy Fiske. The hit scored Ashley Charters who led off the game with a bunt single.

Aimee Minor tacked on another run for the Dawgs with a lead off home run in the second inning. The hit cleared the centerfield wall and marked Minor's 13th home run of the season.

Stanford battled back in the third inning, using a three-run home run by USA Olympian Lauren Lappin to take the 3-2 lead.

The Huskies quickly tied the score in the bottom half of the inning with Rivera's lead off home run.

Washington posted three more runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Jacki Hansen and Charters led off with singles and Dominique Lastrapes walked to load the bases. Rivera drew a walk to bring in the go-ahead run and Fiske hit a two-run single up the middle to put Washington up 6-3.

The Cardinal posted a run in the sixth inning with a ground out to the right side but reliever Ashley Boek closed out the game without another run crossing the plate.

'It was good to see the team battle and fight for the win today,' said head coach Heather Tarr. 'They did a great job of coming back after Stanford tied it and not giving up. Ashley (Boek) did a great job for us in the circle. Stanford is a great hitting team and she found a way to get them out.'

Boek (14-8) earned the win as she held Stanford to one run on two hits in four innings of relief.

Laura Severson (14-5) took the loss for the Cardinal as she gave up three runs on three hits in three innings.

The Huskies continue Pac-10 action tomorrow when they host third-ranked California at 2 pm. The Golden Bears defeated No. 10 UCLA 3-2 earlier today to improve to 41-8 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-10.
