Women's 4x100m Wins Heat at Penn Relays

Competition concluded on the first day of the 2005 Penn Relays. The nation'soldest and largest relay carnival saw the Cal women's 4x100m relay win theirheat and qualify for the Championship of America 4x100m relay to be contestedFriday at 1:00 p.m. CST. Their time of 45.33 beat out some very notablecompetition including a heavily credentialed Texas team, which included threeAll-Americans and a junior national record holder. The time also beat a Stanfordteam, which ran 45.88 in a later heat. Junior Osarhiemen Omwanghe had tomake do without starting blocks as the lead-off leg, since the Penn Relaysdisallows their use due to the massive volume of races. The rest of the team,consisting of junior Tiffany Johnson, senior Shannan Hawes andjunior Antonette Carter ran a solid technically proficient race that theycan hopefully replicate tomorrow.
In the individual events, Carter leapt 19-6 in the long jump to finish ninth.Her season best stands at 20-8.5, which she performed at the Florida Relays inGainesville.
Competition continues tomorrow through Saturday.
