Huskies Lose Heartbreaker To No. 3 Cal 1-0

April 30, 2005

SEATTLE-- Senior Ashley Boek held third-ranked California to three hits but a third inning squeeze bunt proved to be the game-winner for the Golden Bears this afternoon who won 1-0 in front of 1,042 fans at Husky Softball Stadium. The loss snaps Washington's five-game win streak and dips UW to 26-16 and 6-7 in the Pac-10. California improves to 42-8 overall and 9-5 in the Pac-10.

Cal got its first hit of the game in the third frame with a triple by Vicky Galindo that was just out of reach of a diving Jacki Hansen in left field. Chelsea Spencer then executed a squeeze bunt down the third base line to plate Galindo and give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead.

Cal ace Kristina Thorson did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Aimee Minor doubled off the right field wall. Thorson struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Huskies threatened again in the sixth frame with a two-out double by Dominique Lastrapes to left-centerfield. Kristen Rivera drew an intentional walk but Thorson struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Thorson (19-4) sat the Huskies down in order in the seventh to earn her fourth shutout of the season. She allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out 13.

Boek (14-9) took the tough loss as she gave up just three hits, while striking out four.

Washington and California complete the three-game series tomorrow at 1 pm.
