No. 3 California Defeats No. 22 Washington, 1-0

April 30, 2005

Seattle, Wash. - Senior Chelsea Spencer's third inning squeeze bunt proved to be the game-winner for the No. 3 Golden Bears this afternoon, who defeated No. 22 Washington 1-0 in front of 1,042 fans at Husky Softball Stadium. The win improves Cal's record to 42-8 overall and 9-5 in the Pac-10, while snapping Washington's five-game win streak, as the Huskies fall to 26-16 and 6-7 in the Pac-10.

Cal got its first hit of the game in the third inning with a triple by Vicky Galindo that was just out of reach of a diving Jacki Hansen in left field. Spencer then executed a squeeze bunt down the third base line to plate Galindo and give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead.

Cal ace Kristina Thorson did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Aimee Minor doubled off the right field wall. Thorson struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Huskies threatened again in the sixth frame with a two-out double by Dominique Lastrapes to left-centerfield. Kristen Rivera drew an intentional walk but Thorson struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Thorson (19-4) sat the Huskies down in order in the seventh to earn her fourth shutout of the season. She allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out 13.

Washington and California complete the three-game series tomorrow at 1 pm.
