May 3, 2005

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University Women's Basketball Head Coach Sherri Murrell announced the hiring of Tara Jones as an assistant coach to the program, Tuesday.

'In Tara, we are getting a complete package: an experienced coach and athlete, a consummate professional and an unbelievable role model and mentor,' Murrell said.

'Her enthusiasm, energy and excitement about being a part of Cougar Basketball made it an easy decision for me,' Murrell added.

Jones, who fills the position vacated by Christopher Holland, was a four-year letterwinner as a guard at Indiana University from 1998-2002. During the 2001-02 season, Jones averaged 7.1 points a game for a team that captured the first Big Ten Championship in school history.

While at Indiana, Jones played for then Hoosier Head Coach Kathi Bennett, daughter of WSU Head Men's Basketball Coach Dick Bennett.

After graduating from Indiana and prior to arriving at WSU, Jones served as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida. Among Jones' duties at USF were recruiting, scout preparation, and the development of marketing and promotion plans for the program.

'I am thankful for the opportunity to work for the women's basketball program at Washington State,' Jones said. 'I am excited to work with such an experienced staff.

'I was attracted to the passion the coaches have for this program and I look forward to being a part of the future success of the team,' Jones added.
