May 8, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked UCLA softball team won its third game of the weekend, defeating Arizona State by an 8-0 margin in five innings on Sunday afternoon. Lisa Dodd pitched a one-hit shutout on the day, striking out two and retiring the final 13 batters she faced.
UCLA batted around in the top of the first inning with a single and outfield error from Andrea Duran, plus a wild pitch to put the opening batter of the game on third base. Tara Henry and Caitlin Benyi followed with consecutive walks to load the bases before Emily Zaplatosch connected on a two-RBI single through the left side, scoring Henry and Duran. Jodie Legaspi followed with a double to right, scoring Benyi and prompting a pitching change from the Sun Devils.
With relief pitcher Desiree Serrano in the circle, Krista Colburn connected on a sacrifice fly to score Zaplatosch and increase UCLA's lead to 4-0. A double just fair down the right field line by Lisa Dodd plated Legaspi, completing the five-run inning for the Bruins. Legaspi would lead off the third inning with her seventh home run of the season, upping the Bruin advantage to a 6-0 margin.
Another pair of solo home runs, the fourth of the year from Duran, and the eighth of the season from Benyi, both in the fourth inning, put the Bruins up 8-0 and forced the Sun Devils to use their third pitcher of the afternoon.
Meanwhile, in the circle, Dodd pitched another solid game, striking out the first two batters of the inning before allowing the lone hit of the game. Dodd then proceeded to retire the final 13 batters she faced on the day to improve to 9-5 on the season.
UCLA concludes its 2005 regular season schedule next week, hosting Oregon for a 1 pm Thursday first pitch, then Oregon State for Friday and Saturday contests. The field for the 2005 NCAA Championship will be announced next Sunday, May 15.
