May 13, 2005
Coral Gables, Fla. - The No. 24 California women's tennis team recovered after dropping the doubles point to defeat No. 35 Mississippi, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA Regionals. The win snaps a four-match losing streak for the Golden Bears, who will be advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships for the 21st consecutive year.
The match opened with the Rebels capturing the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Cal's No. 1 doubles duo of freshmen Suzi Babos and Stephanie Kusano, ranked No. 37 in the nation, were leading 6-5 on court one, before Ole Miss clinched the point and play was stopped.
After losing on court three and falling behind 2-0, Cal rallied to win four of five matches and clinch the victory. Junior co-captain Jessica Shu was the first Bear to notch a victory today, defeating Mimi Subramanian in straight sets on court five, 6-3; 6-3. The win was No. 26 on the year for Shu, who recently advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles invite draw at the Pac-10 Championships.
Cal evened the score at 2-2 when No. 8 Babos picked up her team-high 31st win of the year, defeating No. 38 Chloe Carlotti on court one, 6-4; 6-4. The victory is Babos' eighteenth over nationally-ranked opponents.
Freshman Marion Ravelojaona tallied a win for the Bears on court five, where she beat Virginia Tomatis in two sets, 7-6(5); 6-3.
Cal clinched the match on court six, where No. 73 Cristina Visico, another first-year player for the Bears, defeated Preethi Subramanian, 6-2; 6-4. The win was No. 24 this year for Visico, who closed out the regular-season with a 12-match win streak.
The win was No. 500 for head coach Jan Brogan, who becomes just the fourth Cal coach all-time to reach the 500 win plateau. Brogan, in her 27 years as the women's head coach, has amassed a 500-204 record.
The Bears will face the winner of today's match between No. 9 Miami and Florida Atlantic Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
