Ashley Younce Places Third On OSU's All-Time Top 10 List In The 10,000 Meters At The Pac-10 Championships

May 14, 2005

Los Angeles, Calif. - OSU women's track finished their first day of competition this Saturday at the Pac-10 Championships in Los Angeles, California. Seven ladies made the trip for the Beavers, six of them competing in the 1,500 meters, 10,000 meters, and the 3,000 meters steeplechase today.

'The ladies did really well today and I am very pleased,' OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'They are quite pleased and being here has shown them that this level of competition is very attainable for the future'.

Ashley Younce finished 9th of 12 runners in the finals of the 10,000 with a time of 37:37.21, barely missing scoring by one spot. The win placed her third on OSU's All-Time Top 10 list, behind Kathy Nolton's 1984 time of 36:21.69. OSU's Nicole Crawford came in 12th in the event with a time of 39:12.96.

'This was Younce's first 10,000 ever,' Sullivan said. 'For her to place ninth in the Pac-10 and miss scoring by one spot is impressive. It was eight-five degrees today so times were affected. It was really very hot and Younce ran at 5:30 which is the hottest time of the day, so it was really quite impressive considering she is use to running in cooler weather.'

Kaitlin Poggi, Jean-Marie Peterson, and Taylor Bryant competed in the trial heat of the 1,500 today. Poggi finished first for OSU and 13th of 17 overall with a time of 4:29.85, allowing her to move on and compete in the finals of the event tomorrow. Bryant and Peterson finished consecutively behind her in thirteenth and fourteenth respectively, with times of 4:42.15 and 4:42.82.

'Poggi making it into the finals was a really nice surprise,' Sullivan said. 'We will have our first OSU lady qualify into the finals since the program began again. She had to take out Peterson to make it into the finals, it would have been her or Peterson, and Poggi did really well.'

Lauren Denfeld finished 15th of 18 runners in the steeplechase with a time of 11:28.38. The race marked the second time Denfeld has ever run the steeplechase, the first time was last weekend at the Oregon Twilight.

'I was telling Jean-Marie, Francis, and Crawford that a year ago they were just in school at OSU,' Sullivan said. 'Now a year later they are running in the Pac-10 meet, it is really phenomenal'.

OSU will finish the Pac-10 meet tomorrow, when Kaitlin Poggi competes in the final of the 1,500 and Ashley Francis competes in the final of the 5,000.
