Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's softball team grabbed a share of the 2005 Pac-10 title today, despite a 3-2 loss to No. 3 Arizona at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. It is the first Pac-10 title for the Cardinal in the history of the program. Stanford ends the regular season with a 40-13 overall record, 13-8 in league play. The 13 wins ties a Cardinal record set last year for most conference wins in a single season.
Stanford shares the Pac-10 title with Arizona, California and Oregon State who all ended league play with a 13-8 record.
Arizona jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Caitlin Lowe hit a two-run homer in the top of the third. The Wildcats would add one more run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-0.
Stanford fought back in the bottom of the seventh when Meghan Sickler opened the inning with a double to left. Tricia Aggabao singled to center, bringing home Sickler. With one out Catalina Morris doubled to center, moving Aggabao to third. A wild pitch brought Aggabao home and closed the gap to one run. Lauren Lappin was then intentionally walked. The Cardinal had their chances with the bases loaded and one out but were unable to push a run across.
Becky McCullough (18-5) took the loss for Stanford, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innnings of work with four strikeouts and no walks.
The field of 64 teams for NCAA postseason play will be announced tomorrow on ESPN News between 4:30 and 5 p.m. PT.
