Adam Midles Wins Pac-10 Hammer Crown On First Day Of 2005 Championships

Sophomore Adam Midles threw 208-10 to win the hammer competition Saturday (May 14) to lead the USC track squad in the first day of the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Westwood, Calif. Overall, the men's and women's track athletes collected over 25 qualifying marks in the preliminary rounds of Pac-10 competition.
The men finished the day in eighth place (the Oregon Ducks led the pack with 63.50 points after seven scored events. Stanford led on the women's side with 61 points and the Women of Troy were last with one point (only three USC competitors competed in two of Saturday's six scored events).
Midles' victory marks the eighth hammer championship won by USC in thirteen years, joining the sophomore with '93-96 Pac-10 champion Balazs Kiss and '99-'01 champion Norbert Horvath.
Senior Allen Simms jumped 25-1 ¾ to finish second in the long jump competition to earn eight points for USC and classmate Dennis Rice placed eighth in the javelin to gain one more point for the Trojans.
On the women's side, sophomore Andrea McBride earned the Women of Troy one point throwing 147-09 to place eighth in the javelin competition.

The action continues Sunday beginning with the women's hammer at 10:30 a.m and the 4x100 will kick off the field event finals at 1:30p.m.
The Trojans are equipped to score some big points on Sunday and looking for big performances in the final day of the Pac-10 championships.
