No. 24 Cal in 7th After NCAA 1st Round

SUNRIVER, Ore. - No. 24 California is in seventh place with a 295 Tuesday after the opening round of the NCAA Championships at the Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort. The Golden Bears are making their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance and look to improve on last year's program-best fourth place showing.

No. 14 USC - the 2003 NCAA team champion - is in first at three-over 287, while No. 2 UCLA - the 2004 NCAA team champion - is in second at 288. No. 3 Auburn is third at 290, No. 4 Pepperdine is fourth at 291, and No. 1 Duke is tied for fourth with No. 10 Washington at 292. Rounding out the top 10 are Arkansas (296), Oklahoma State (298) and Stanford (300) and Tennessee (300).

Cal teed off from hole 10 at 1:30 p.m. PT and finished the back nine at three-over. Junior Sophia Sheridan is tied for 21st and leads the Bears at plus-one 73 today - carding two bogeys and a birdie on the front and back nine. Cal senior Claire Dury, junior Sofie Andersson and freshman Enu Chung are all tied for 35th at 74.

Chung and Dury started the round with an even-par 36 on the back nine before struggling a bit on the front nine. Chung fired birdies on holes 10-12 in her first NCAA Championships appearance. Dury notched birdies on the par 5, 10th and 17th holes and a birdie on the par four, 12th. The Bears were able to drop sophomore Mika Takayama's score of 78.

Pepperdine's Carolina Llano leads the individual race at two-under 69, and USC's Dewi Schreefel is second at one-under 70. Nine golfers are tied for third at 71.

Cal tees off the second round Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT from hole 1. The Bears are paired with athletes from Furman and Missouri, as they were today.
