Cougars at USA Track & Field Championships

June 27, 2005

CARSON, Calif. -- Cougar Track & Field participants from the past, the present and the future competed at the USATF 2005 Outdoor Championships and the USATF 2005 Junior Championships held at the Home Depot Center at Carson, Calif. The top two placers in the senior meet advance to the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland Aug. 6-14, while the juniors competed for spots on the USA team for the 2005 Pan American Junior Championships, July 28-31, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

In the Junior Championships (under 20-year olds), Cougar freshman Sarah Burns (Tacoma, Wash.) placed ninth in the women's triple jump with a leap of 38-feet, 7 inches (11.76m). Incoming freshman Moreno Zapata (Lakewood, Wash.) finished sixth in the men's triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 49-11 (15.21m). Coming into the competition, Burns had a personal-best of 40-7 1/2 (12.38m) and Zapata's PR was 50-11 1/2w.

In the USA Championships, former Cougar All-Americans Ian Waltz (2000) won the discus throw with a throw of 211-9 (64.54m) and Dominique Arnold (1996) finished second in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of lifetime-best time of 13.01 seconds. Both advance to compete at Helsinki.

'I didn't think I'd be this fast,' Arnold, the 1996 NCAA high hurdles champion, said. 'There was no indication that we would all run this fast. My start was shaky, but I've been working on coming off my last hurdle. Today I PR'd, and I'm excited. I always knew I could run faster than 13.11, but injuries have hindered me. To run that fast now is great.'

Eric Dudley (2003), unattached, finished 31st in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 52.00 seconds. Anthony Buchanan (2004), running for Ehi, finished 25th in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.46 seconds. Francesca Green (1996), competing for the Indiana Invaders Track Club, finished 16th in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-7 1/2.
