June 27, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State linebacker Will Derting was named to the 2005 Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseason watch list Monday, by The Football Writers Association of America.
The trophy, named in honor of Bronko Nagurski, a past All-American at the University of Minnesota and NFL All-Pro player with the Chicago Bears, is awarded to the best defensive player in college football. The FWAA All-American Committee will select the Bronko Nagurski winner from the association's 11-man All-American defensive team in late November.
Derting earned second team All-Pac-10 honors, racking up 93 tackles in 2004, including 11.5 behind the line of scrimmage with 3.5 sacks. The Okanogan, Wash., notched a career-high 14 tackles against No. 1 USC with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Derting earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2003 and was twice named the conference's defensive player of the week following performances against Notre Dame and Oregon State that year.
The recognition continues for the Washington State senior with preseason nods on the 2005 Lombardi Award, Lott Trophy, and Ted Bednarik Award watch lists.
Derting is one of 50 players on the 2005 Bronko Nagurski watch list, joining fellow Pac-10 linemen Jon Alston of Stanford, Trent Bray of Oregon State, Haloti Ngata of Oregon, Spencer Havner of UCLA and Darnell Bing of USC.
