SEATTLE- From July 14-18, the World's best softball teams will convene in Oklahoma City for the first ever World Cup of Softball and three Washington players will participate in the tournament. Former Huskies Jaime Clark and Jenny Topping will represent the USA Softball Women's National Team, while soon-to-be Washington freshman Danielle Lawrie represents Team Canada.
Also competing in the World Cup are Australia and Japan, who won silver and bronze medals respectively at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and 1996 silver medalist China.
Topping received a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, while Clark was one of three alternates.
Lawrie, who signed with the Huskies last November, is a pitcher for the Canadian National Team.
The World Cup is a round robin format with a page playoff system similar to the Olympic Games. The scheduled USA games will be broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN2 with tape delay and LIVE feeds.
Tournament play opens tonight with the USA facing Canada. The game will be televised on ESPN2 at 7 pm PT.
