ASU's Manya Makoski Helps Team USA's U-21 Women to Their Seventh Straight Nordic Cup Title
July 26, 2005
Karlskoga, Sweden - ASU student-athlete Manya Makoski, who competed in her third straight Nordic Cup for the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team, helped the U.S. claim its seventh straight Nordic Cup title with a 4-1 win over Norway on Tuesday. The cup championship, which was the third for Makoski in as many years, was the eighth for the U.S. in the last nine tournaments, having appeared in the title game in each one of those years.
Makoski (Trumbull, Conn.), who earned her 15th cap in the game, returns for the Sun Devils for her senior season this fall, after tying for the team lead with six goals last season. She also notched a goal for the U-21 WNT in competition earlier this summer.
ASU incoming freshman Bjorg Thordadottir, also competing in the 2005 Nordic Cup, helped her team to a sixth-place finish in the tournament as a member of Iceland's Under-21 team. Thordardottir, who started all four of Iceland's matches and played every minute of the 2005 Nordic Cup, will join the Sun Devils on the defensive line this season.
The Sun Devils kick off the 2005 season on August 26, as they travel to No. 3 Santa Clara to take on the Broncos, who fell in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals last year.
