Huskies Start Play at Western Amateur

Benton Harbor, MI - Washington junior Alex Prugh shot 1-over 71 to lead a group of three Husky golfers competing at the 103rd Western Amateur Golf Championship at the Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. Prugh's score has him tied for 20th place after the opening round of play. Brian Carroll of Crystal Lake, Ill., leads the field at 5-under 65.

Husky junior Erik Olson, who advanced to the final 16 of the 156-man tournament last year, is one stroke behind Prugh in 24th place. UW sophomore Joe Panzeri is 76th at 5-over 75.

The Western Amateur features one round of stroke play on Wednesday and Thursday and then the field will be cut to the low 50 scorers and ties. Friday will feature two rounds of stroke play to narrow the field to 16 competitors. Saturday and Sunday will feature two rounds of match play each day to determine the champion.
