Welch Falls in Round of 64 at U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 3, 2005

ROSWELL, Ga. - Jennifer Ackerson (Allen, Texas) defeated former Washington State University All-American Kim Welch (Sacramento, Calif.) 5 and 4 in the first round of match play at the United States Women's Amateur Championship at the par 72, 6,341 yard Settindown Creek course of Ansley Golf Club, Wednesday.

Welch earned a spot in the match play field as a result of finishing in a tie for 19th place in the stroke play qualifying rounds Monday and Tuesday. The two-time All-American began the match on a positive note by winning the first hole to go 1 up as Ackerson carded a double bogey.

Ackerson rebounded with a birdie on the next hole to even the match but Welch regained her 1 up advantage as Ackerson bogeyed the third.

That would be the last advantage Welch would enjoy the rest of the way; however, as Ackerson strung together consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 4 and 5 to take a 1 up advantage.

Ackerson extended her lead to 3 up by winning Nos. 7 and 8. Ackerson's lead was cut to 2 up as Welch won the ninth hole but Ackerson put the match away by winning the next three holes to go 5 up through 12. Ackerson clinched the victory when she and Welch halved the next two holes.

Welch re-wrote the school record book during her four-year career at WSU. A four-time All-Pac-10 selection, Welch compiled 11 wins, 31 top 10 finishes and 40 top 25 finishes in her WSU career. Additionally, Welch finished in the top 10 in over 60 percent of events played in during her time at WSU.

Welch was one of three Cougars competing at the event and the only one of the trio to advance to match play. Incoming freshman Amy Eneroth of Spokane, Wash. shot rounds of 80-76 to finish at 12-over 156 as did incoming senior Anastasia Kostina (Nakhabino, Russia), who carded rounds of 77 and 79. Both players completed stroke play qualifying tied for 75th, just two shots shy of the cut line.

Kostina was the subject of a feature story by the United States Golf Association, which ran Tuesday on the U.S. Amateur website at www.uswamateur.org
