Two Bruins Recognized By College Soccer News As Pre-Season All-Americans

Aug. 22, 2005

Juniors Patrick Ianni (Lodi, Calif.) and Brandon Owens (Murrieta, Calif.) have been recognized by College Soccer News as pre-season All-Americans. Ianni, a defensive midfielder and the 2004 Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, is a first-team selection, while Owens, a Freshman All-American in 2003, is a third-team honoree.

Ianni was a starter for the U.S. Under-20 National Team that advanced to the Round of 16 at the World Youth Championships this summer. The U-20s did not allow a goal in three games of group play and won Group D, tabbed the 'Group of Death', after posting 1-0 wins over Argentina and Egypt and a 0-0 tie against Germany. In 2004, Ianni was selected the Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year and earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors.

Owens also saw action with the Under-20s last November, earning three career U-20 caps and 36 overall with the various youth national teams. He earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors for the Bruins in 2004, helping the Bruin defense earn a 0.82 goals against average and eight shutouts. In 2003, he started 20 of 23 games and was named to Soccer America's All-Freshman list. He was also the only freshman to receive first-team All-Pac-10 honors.

In addition, Soccer America has ranked UCLA No. 2 in its pre-season rankings. The Bruins are ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA pre-season poll.
