Lepp Cruises to Stroke Play Victory at U.S. Amateur

Ardmore, PA - Washington senior James Lepp (Abbotsford, British Columbia) easily won medalist honors for the stroke play portion of the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship today at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Lepp shot 5-under 65 on the Merion course today for a two-day, 36-hole total of 5-under 135 to top the field of 312 competitors. The second-place finisher, Korey Mahoney, was four shots behind Lepp at 139.
Lepp had six birdies and one bogie during today's round. His score was the best by any competitor during the second round. Lepp earned an exemption into the tournament by virtue of winning the NCAA individual title. He opened the tournament Monday by carding an even par 70 on the Philadelphia Country Club course.
Lepp will be the top seed for the match play portion of the tournament that begins Wednesday. Match play will take place through Sunday on the Merion Course. A single round of match play is scheduled on Wednesday (Aug. 24), followed by the second and third rounds on Thursday (Aug. 25), and single rounds again from Friday-Sunday (Aug. 26-28). The match play field consists of the top 64 finishers from stroke play.
The Golf Channel and NBC Sports will televise the match play portion of the tournament.
