Cardinal Men's Soccer Hosts Stanford Nike Classic

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's soccer team (1-4-1) hosts the Stanford Nike Classic, Friday, September 23 and Sunday, September 25 this weekend at Maloney Field on the Stanford campus. Participating team include Stanford, California (5-0-1), Army (1-6-0) and UAB (5-1-0). Stanford takes on Alabama-Birmingham on Friday Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. while Cal will face Army in the 5 p.m. match-up. On Sunday, September 25, the Cardinal will be paired with Army at 2:30 p.m. and the Golden Bears will take on UAB at noon.
Stanford will try to rebound from two weekend losses to Santa Clara (L, 2-1 in overtime) and San Francisco (L, 1-0) against UAB. Marcus Ryan has two goals and an assist to lead the team in scoring with five points.
UAB is coming off a 2-0 win over Evansville Sunday at the UAB Classic in which it recorded its first shutout of the season. Jerson Monteiro and Maurice Hughes both scored for the Blazers. UAB lost, 3-1, however, on Friday night of the tournament to previous No. 13 UNC Greensboro. The Blazers and Cardinal have never met before on the field.
Army is currently 1-6 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. Fordham defeated Army, 3-2, last weekend at Van Doren field in West Point, NY. Freshman forward Garrett Dresel currently leads the team in scoring with two goals for the season, while junior defender Pierre Hines has recorded one game-winning goal for the Black Knights. Sunday's game will mark the first meeting between Army and the Cardinal.
Stanford kicks off conference action next week at San Diego State on Friday, September 30 at 4 p.m. The Cardinal then travel to Los Angeles on Sunday, October 2 to take on UCLA at 1 p.m.
