Sept. 23, 2005
STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Cynthia Barboza registered a season-high 26 kills Friday as the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal defeated the No. 12 USC Women of Troy, 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-21), in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams. Barboza hit a sizzling .511 (26-3-45) to lead the Cardinal.
Stanford improved to 12-1 on the season while USC fell to 4-5 overall. Senior Staci Venski led USC with 12 kills
The Cardinal jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first game before the Women of Troy battled back to a 10-10 tie. Kristin Richards used a kill to spark a streak of four straight points for the Cardinal as park of a 7-1 run for an 18-13 advantage. A solo block by Bibiana Candelas and kill off by the block by Katelyn Bishop gave USC some momentum but Barboza halted it with the last of her three consecutive kills.
After a Stanford time out, the Cardinal used another 5-1 run and looked to cruise to the game victory before USC a run of its own. Down 27-24, two solo blocks by Diane Copenhagen and kills by Candelas and Copenhagen gave the Women of Troy game point at 29-28. Richards recorded a key kill to tie the game, followed by a service ace from Bryn Kehoe. Barboza hammered a shot down the line as Stanford took game one.
Jessica Fishburn served six straight points in the second game as Stanford led, 10-5. The Women of Troy, however, battled until they were only down by one point, 18-17. Stanford held onto the lead, but Candelas used two kills as the score was tied again at 25-25. Barboza used two more kills and a key ball handling error call made it a 29-26 lead for the Cardinal. Copenhagen ripped a back row kill, but a costly USC service error put Stanford ahead with the 2-0 lead in the match.
Both teams traded blows again early in the third game. Five of Stanford's points came via Barboza kills as the Cardinal held a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. Stanford pulled away late in the game to register the three-game sweep.
USC plays at No. 25 California tomorrow in a 7 p.m. contest.
