Swimming Begins 2005-06 Season at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday

The UCLA swim team will head up the coast to Santa Barbara for their first competition of the year on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11:30 am for a dual meet with UCSB and Oregon State.

Last year at home, UCLA soundly defeated both the Gauchos and Beavers to open up the 2004-05 season. The Bruins beat UCSB 156-98 and Oregon State 149-108, improving their all-time record against Santa Barbara to 21-0 and 4-0 over the Beavers.

A group of 23 swimmers will make the trip, highlighted by 2005 All-American and World University Games silver medalist Kim Vandenberg. Last season, Vandenberg won three events (200 Free, 50 Free, 100 Fly), while Chiemi Yamamoto (200 Breast, 400 IM) and Jane Imagane (500 Free, 1000 Free) each won two events.

UCLA's four freshmen swimmers will also see their first collegiate action on Saturday as Ellen Brooks, Kristin Fischer, Anna Poteete and Madeliene Stanton are slated to compete.

Also heading to Santa Barbara are - seniors Kendall Butler, Shellene Catalano, Krista Daley, Liz Keating and Eileen Seissen; juniors Katie Arnold, Jeana Fuccillo, Jane Imagane, Courtney Iversen, Isabel Miesner, Katie Nelson and Amy Thurman; sophomores Shannon Hackett, Lindsay Jones, Nicolette Teo, Katherine Wong and Chiemi Yamamoto; and redshirt freshman Erin Ketchum will return to competition after sitting out last season with shoulder surgery.
