WSU Increases Post-Game Security For Visitors

Oct. 13, 2005

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State University officials will close off sidewalks around Bohler Gym at the conclusion of future football games and will not allow fans access between neighboring buildings until the visiting team has walked to their lockerroom, announced Assistant Director of Athletics John David Wicker.

'We continue to make the safety of our visitors a top priority and will continue to work to improve upon this issue,' Wicker said.

'Two years ago we fenced off a corridor for the visiting team during their walk from the Physical Education Building to the entrance to Martin Stadium,' he explained. 'This year we are not allowing fans access to the route the visiting team takes leaving the field and walking to their lockerroom at the end of the game. When all visiting team personnel arrives at their lockerroom, we will open access to the sidewalks.'

Wicker said the decision to keep fans away from the visiting team is another step in providing a safe environment by eliminating a potential confrontation between fans and WSU's opponent at the end of the game when emotions can get out of control.
