UCLA Prepares for The Prestige
Oct. 15, 2005
The UCLA men's golf team will participate in The Prestige at PGA West, Oct. 17-18. The tournament is hosted by UC Davis and Stanford at the PGA West complex and features a quality field of nationally ranked teams.
'We're looking forward to getting back there,' said Head Coach O.D.Vincent. 'We've won it twice in the past and we hope to be in contention this year.
'What makes this event unique is that it will be played on the Greg Norman Course one day after Stage One of PGA Tour qualifying,' continued Vincent. 'The players will get a chance to play a tough course under championship conditions. It will be a great barometer for our players to judge teh quality of their golf games.'
Competing for the Bruins will be two juniors, a sophomore, and a pair of freshmen. The Prestige is UCLA's third tournament in as many weeks and the Bruins will field their third different lineup.
'We're using a new strategy this Fall,' said Vincent. 'Every player will get a chance to play in a Gold Team event. At the end of the Fall, we'll determine through these results our top five players.'
All five players competing at The Prestige have recorded a Top 20 finish this season. Junior Chris Heintz tied for fifth at the Chico State Invitational last week with an even par score of 216. Freshman Erik Flores and sophomore Daniel Im each tied for ninth at the Big 10/Pac 10 Challenge with scores of one-under par 215. Freshmen Lucas Lee tied for 17th at the Chico State event and junior Joakim Renstrom tied for 18th at the Big 10/Pac 10 tournament.
