Jessica Lawson Out for Season with Torn ACL

Oct. 17, 2005

BERKELEY, Calif. - California center Jessica Lawson will miss the entire 2005-06 women's basketball season due to an ACL tear. The sophomore sustained the injury to her left knee in practice last Thursday.

The 6-3 Lawson is scheduled to have surgery in about three weeks.

'It's a huge loss,' first-year Cal head coach Joanne Boyle said. 'The team needs to regroup and pick up the slack. Jessica is a great leader for us. Roles will now change and players need to embrace that. It has to be a team effort to fill Jess' role. Not having one of our floor leaders will test us early because we're so young. It's a positive that we'll have her back with this group for three more seasons because she hasn't played in any games this year.'

Lawson, a product of Edgewood, Fla., averaged 10.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season to earn Pac-10 All-Freshman recognition. She led the Bears in rebounding and blocked shots (21) and ranked second on the team in scoring in 2004-05. Her 49.8 field goal percentage ranked fifth in the Pac-10 and first among all conference freshmen last year.

Cal opens 2005-06 with an exhibition game against the Bay Area Pro Am Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The regular season tips off at home against Eastern Washington Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT.
